What is Carpet Binding?
Carpet binding is a trade linked with the flooring business. The process
of carpet binding is to sew an exterior edging to an area rug. The phrase
“carpet binding” generally links all of the applications that are
available for the edges of your carpet.
What are the applications available in carpet
binding?
The applications of carpet binding include:
• Polyester
binding
• Cotton
binding
• Serging
yarn
• Fringe
• Sisal
Binding (a.k.a. “wide border binding”)
***Please refer to our carpet binding services page to get more detail on
each application!***
Does Carpet Binding add to the size of the
carpet?
Aside from fringing, which ranges from 2 inches - 4 inches in length,
there is a fraction of an inch that may be added to the size of your piece
with any application you choose.
Most applications are folded around the edge of the
carpet, to be stitched on the front & back of the carpet. You end up
contending with the gage of the material used.
Again, it’s fractional , less than 1/8 inch.
Is it only done for retail stores & manufacturers
?
No.
Anybody with a piece of carpet can have that piece
bound to the size & shape that they desire, with any of the applications
of their choice! DWP Carpet Binding happily accepts walk-ins of any nature
for binding services!
If I have remnants left-over from a previous
installation, can I bind those?
Yes!
It’s always a great idea to save any remnants you
may end up with after having carpet installed. Remnants are useful if any
repairs are needed; carpet remnants also make great area rugs or mats
around the house or for those high traffic areas.
If I have an area rug that needs to be repaired
will carpet binding services help?
In most cases, yes!
Aside from pieces that need to be hand tufted, most
area rugs can be repaired by a carpet binding shop.
Can I bind a carpet with my grandma’s sewing
machine?
No.
DWP Carpet Binding uses heavy duty sewing machines
that were structured for heavy duty material, such as carpets. The gage of
the needles we use could go through a finger with ease. Our machines also
have feed pullers, which rotate to pull items weighing hundreds of pounds
through the sewing machine.
The sewing machines most use for their hobby or hemming clothing is no
where near capable of binding a carpet.
What is the cost of carpet binding?
Each application varies in cost.
The most valuable piece of information to know is that you will be charged
by the linear foot; being that any binding application is sewn around the
edges only.
For example a 9 ft. by 12 ft. area rug would have 42
linear feet.
The price of the application multiplied by the number of linear feet
involved is how we calculate the price of the binding service.
No retail store or binding shop will have the same
prices, so shop around to get your best price quote!
I have a wall-to-wall carpet that I’d like to cut
into multiple area rugs, will a binding shop do that?
Yes!
DWP Carpet Binding has had customers that came in
with a wall-to-wall carpeting then had it cut and fabricated to multiple
pieces. If you’re moving this is a great way to salvage fairly new carpet.
Be cautious of any staples left in the carpet after rip-up!
Can I bring any used carpet in for a repair or
binding work?
Yes!
DWP Carpet Binding is happy to help you salvage any
piece that has sentimental value to you, however we prefer that your
carpet is cleaned prior to it being bound for two reasons:
1. Hygiene.
People have pets & pets have accidents. Would you roll around urine
infested carpet? Probably not. We don’t want to either, nor do we want to
handle it.
2. Sand & Dust are our machines’ worst enemies.
The more sand & dust that gets into the crevices of our machines, the more
likely they are to fail. DWP Carpet Binding takes pride in maintaining the
up-keep of our machines; working with clean used carpets is one step of
doing so.
Please Note:
Any used carpet that is brought into our shop without being cleaned first
will be charged additional costs. |
